Grant County Fire Management pursuant to Fire Code Ordinance 14-2 has issued county-wide restrictions due to the severe drought conditions and a state of fire emergency. Open fires, including but not limited to campfires, charcoal grills, stove fires, and other open fires used for cooking are prohibited, except in developed camp and picnic grounds where agency-built fire rings or grills are provided. Covered propane grills are generally allowed on areas of barren dirt, pavement, concrete or similar surfaces. Other restrictions are in place regarding welding safety, outdoor smoking, and the disposing of hot ashes and smoldering materials. The restrictions are effective immediately and remain in effect until conditions improve and will only be lifted at the direction of the Fire Management Officer and/or the Grant County Manager. Violations of this ordinance will guilty of a misdemeanor with a fine not to exceed $300 and possible imprisonment for up to 90 days, or both.

The Give Grandly Coalition and the Grant County Community Foundation are presenting “Give Grandly”, a 24-hour day-of-giving for 55 local non-profit organizations that make Southwest New Mexico a great place to live, work and play. Members of the community can support local arts, culture, food security, animal welfare, the environment, youth engagement, and more. Individuals can donate in person at the Makers Market in Downtown Silver City this Saturday, May 7th from 9:00 A.M. to 2:00 pm. In addition, people can listen live and donate at give grandly dot org.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12212 is a new Post in Grant County and is holding meetings every 3rd Saturday of the month at 11:00 A.M. in the Santa Clara Armory. The group continues to welcome new and former members to join the growing organization that provides scholarships and community service.
