The 72nd National Day of Prayer will take place in Silver City on May 4th. This event will unite people in prayer across many denominations and faiths. Participants will pray for families, churches, businesses, education and more. It will take place at Gough park from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and is open to the public.
Western New Mexico University will be holding its Spring 2023 commencement ceremony. Students will be honored with associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The ceremony will be Friday, May 5th at 6:00 p.m. at the Ben Altamirano field on the Western New Mexico Campus. Participants can either attend in person or via zoom. The Grant County Commission’s meeting recently honored Loren and Barbara Nelson for all the volunteer work they have done for the community. The Nelson’s have been in Grant County for 21 years and are both retired teachers. They helped organize and plan the beginning stages of The Commons and also brought the Imagination Library to the County in 2010 and now, thanks to them, it is in all 33 counties of New Mexico.
The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Library is offering after school programs for school aged children. The programs are on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children will be able to learn about electrical circuits, mazes, puzzles and other logical thinking skills. Congratulations to Deming’s SkillsUSA team who recently won a silver medal as a “Chapter of Excellence” for the state of New Mexico. SkillsUSA is a national organization that partners with students, faculty, industry and the work sector to build a stronger workforce through education, training and hands-on experience in various job fields. The team also brought home multiple individual medals which will qualify those individuals to compete at the National Skills and Leadership Conference in June.
