At Tuesday’s Silver City Town Council meeting, the Silver City Fire Marshal announced that while fire restrictions will not be increased immediately, additional measures are likely to be implemented later this month. The proposed measures are expected to build upon existing Stage 1 restrictions, introducing further precautions in response to heightened fire risk. The Fire Marshal also indicated that enhanced fire restrictions, potentially including limitations on the sale of fireworks, will be presented to the council at its May 27 meeting.

Congratulations to Mr. Lee Wilson who has been honored as Silver High School’s 2025 Teacher of the Year in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the school community. Since joining Silver High School in 1996, Mr. Wilson has taught at the Silver High Opportunity School from 2003 to 2008 and coached the baseball team for two decades, leading them to numerous district and state championships. Currently, he serves as the Social Studies Department Chair and co-sponsor of the Silver High National History Day program. This year, in addition to his leadership responsibilities, Mr. Wilson assumed full oversight of the National History Day program, demonstrating exceptional commitment to supporting both students and colleagues.

The Gila National Forest is letting the community know that they have received multiple reports concerning a human-habituated bear frequenting the Jordan Hot Springs area within the Gila Wilderness. The bear has exhibited increasingly dangerous behavior, including charging at hikers, harassing campers, destroying a tent, and entering the hot spring while it was occupied by visitors. In response, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is advising the public to avoid the area until a thorough investigation can be conducted and appropriate action taken.
