The New Mexico Association of District Attorneys selected three employees serving in the Sixth Judicial District honoring their work. Deputy District Attorney, Anne Swank, was named New Mexico’s Junior Prosecutor of the Year. She serves in the Grant County office and primarily handles cases dealing with violence and child sexual abuse. The award is given to prosecutors with less than five years of experience. Arthur Van Haselen III from the Deming D.A’s office was named as the statewide Community Service Prosecutor of the Year and Jacob Villegas of the Silver City, Lordsburg, and Deming offices was named as New Mexico Investigator of the year. In addition to the statewide awards that were announced during the New Mexico Association of District Attorneys Spring Conference this week, Deputy District Attorney Justin Garwood, was named District Prosecutor of the Year, and Anjuli Vega, was honored as the District’s Support Staff Employee of the Year. Both individuals work primarily out of the Silver City office. The Sixth Judicial District is composed of Grant, Hidalgo and Luna Counties.

PNM will be holding a free assistance event in Silver City to help residential customers pay electric bills. The event has been planned for this Saturday, May 14th but needed to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. When then is re-scheduled, residents needing assistance must bring their PNM bill, proof of income and ID’s for everyone living in the home, and (if available) a copy of a 2021-22 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program approval letter. The Silver City PNM assistance event will be rescheduled and announced to the public soon.

Cobre Consolidated School District Pre-K and Kindergarten has openings for the 2022-23 school year. Parents wanting to enroll their children should stop by your home schools and complete the registration packet.   Documents needed for Pre-K and Kindergarten are an official state birth certification, updated immunization records, and proof of residency (water or electric bill). All students new and returning must have a new registration form turned in to be considered enrolled for the 2022-23 school year.
