On Friday, March 4th, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed Senate Bill 140 titled “The New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship Act”, providing tuition free college for most New Mexicans. The governor signed the legislation alongside college students in a ceremony at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, where more than 125 students have already benefited from the scholarship. According to a news release, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship is the only state funded scholarship program in the country to include both recent high school graduates, returning adult learners, part-time students, career training certifications, associate and bachelor degrees, and summer courses. In addition to covering full tuition and fees at in-state public colleges and universities, the scholarship lets students stack federal aid such as Pell Grants, local scholarships, and private scholarships to pay for books, materials, housing, food, transportation, childcare and other college costs.”

The New Mexico Department of Game & Fish is now accepting grant applications for Off-Highway Vehicle recreations projects and law enforcement patrols. The grant is available for federal, state, and local government agencies as well as not for profit organizations to allow funding for enhancement of safe recreational use or to mitigate impacts of side-by-sides, ATV’s, snowmobiles and motorcycles on public lands. The available funds for the grants are user-generated revenue from OHV registrations collected by the state’s Trail Safety Fund. The City of Lordsburg and the NMDOT are hosting the 2nd Annual Fly-In event this Saturday at the Lordsburg Airport. The public can visit aviation booths, view general aviation aircraft, mingle with pilots, and enjoy free hotdogs and hamburgers.
