Former U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman will give a talk titled, “The Breakdown in Congressional Governing Norms, and Impediments to Serving the Public Interest.” The presentation is based on his book Breakdown: Lessons for a Congress in Crisis, published in 2022, and is sponsored by Western New Mexico University in conjunction with the 2023 New Mexico History Conference in Silver City. This event is free and open to the public. The special talk with happen, Friday, March 31, from 6-8 p.m. at the Global Resources Center Auditorium at WNMU.

The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District has modified the area closure covering the Mogollon Box Day Use Area, opening the northern portion of the site for public access. The southern portion of the day use area remains closed to all entry. The Gila National Forest roads crew continues its efforts to recover from sustained flooding events last summer and fall. Roads that provide critical private access are prioritized for repair over roads that only provide public access to National Forest System lands or recreation sites.
In other Forest Service News: Volunteers and Gila National Forest staff recently worked to improve wildlife habitat northeast of Mimbres. A crew of four volunteers from the New Mexico Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers joined staff from the Gila National Forest to clean up an old fence at Turkey Cienega in the Gila Wilderness. Together, they rolled up and staged for removal 1.5 miles of barbed and woven wire fencing from the Gila Wilderness, near Turkey Cienega tank. The site is located west of the North Star Road on the Gila National Forest, Wilderness Ranger District.
