The National Park Service is closing the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument effective 8:00 A.M., tomorrow, June 5th, and shall remain if effect until rescinded. Due to the Johnson Fire burning within the boundaries of the Gila Wilderness, the Cliff Dwellings are being closed while fire managers implement a burn-out operation. The burn-out will occur west of the Cliff Dwellings in the Gila Wilderness along EE Canyon Trail 163. According to a release, during the burn-out operations access to the Cliff Dwellings will be restricted to fire personnel only and there will be a temporary road closure at the junction of NM Hwy 15 and the road leading to Cliff Dwellings Contact Center. At the time of this report, the lightning caused Johnson Fire has reached the size of 38,225 acres with an estimated containment date of July 15th. The bridge at Exit 22 in Lordsburg will be a part of a major project that begins on Monday, June 7th. The eastbound bridge will be completely demolished and there will be no traffic allowed between 7:00 P.M. to 6:00 A.M. from June 7th through June 18th. Both on and off ramps will be open in both directions to access to Interstate 10 and detour signs will be placed to direct traffic towards alternative routes

There’s a free Summer Safety COVID Vaccination event on tomorrow from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. in Gough Park, located at 1201 North Pope Street in Silver City. All 3 brands of COVID vaccinations will be available for first time vaccinations or second booster shots. The event features family friendly activities including a bike safety rodeo, free bicycle helmets while they last, and much more. In addition, the Luna County Health Council will be hosting an event to assist the community with COVID-19 vaccine registration on tomorrow, from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Pepper’s Supermarket in Deming. This is also a free event.
