In Gila National Forest news, as of 6:00 A.M. this morning, the Black Fire has covered 262,695 acres with 26% containment. There is an in-person Black Fire Community Meeting scheduled for 6:00 P.M. tomorrow evening, Friday June 3rd, at the Black Range Lodge in Kingston. There is an additional Community Meeting led by the U.S Forest Service in San Lorenzo on Monday June 6th with a time and venue to be determined.
The Kiwanis Club of Silver City has awarded their 2022 Annual Key Club Senior Achievement Scholarships to three local students. Each scholarship recipient was a member of Key Club in their respective school and was judged according to academic achievements, involvement with Key Club, community involvement, and educational plans. Today’s featured student is Maleah Diaz, from Silver High School. Maleah was presented with a $500 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Silver Foundation. Maleah held the position of Key Club Vice-President, participated in district activities and virtual meetings, and particularly enjoyed volunteering in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser, local Toys for Tots, and working with shelter animals. In addition to excelling in sports, Maleah was named 2022 Silver High School Valedictorian. Maleah plans on attending UNM in the Fall to pursue a degree in secondary education. Seamless summer meals for kids are available for children 1 to 18 years of age in the Deming Public School District until July 8th. The free ‘Grab N’ Go Service” of breakfast and lunch will be available at the following Luna County locations Monday through Friday from 10:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.: Columbus Village Plaza; BMX Race Park; Central Cafeteria; Courthouse Park; Elsie Vega Park; John T. Waits Park; Nacio Herb Brown Park; Scout Park; Viramontes Park; and Water Tower Park. There will be no service on June 30th or July 4th. For more information, call Deming Schools at 575-546-8841.
