The Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL) program in Silver City will be receiving $150,000 in funding from Western New Mexico University to hire new staff. The program was founded in 2005. According to the President of WILL, the funds will be used to hire a new tech support coordinator and an executive director which will help them provide more learning programs and create more sustainability in the organization. Congratulations to Danli Valdez of Hidalgo County, who recently won the world championship title in the Level 1 Youth Cutting category at the 2023 AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse World Show. She also earned the Reserve World Championship title in the VRH Youth Reining category and is ranked as one of the top youth riders in the country.
The Black Fire fund of New Mexico, which was approved by the legislative session this year, will begin to start assisting the victims of last year’s Black Fire in the upcoming month. Since the fire, public officials, infrastructures and private landowners have been struggling to get funding to repair costly damages. This funding is aimed to help individuals and communities rebuild important infrastructures and properties that were damaged during the fire. The recovery funds are expected to be distributed sometime in July.

The Gila National Forest is asking all campers and those hiking through the area to please be cautious when building and extinguishing campfires. Over the past few weekends, patrols have found a large amount of abandoned campfires that were still burning and not completely put out. Forest management is asking that campfires be completely extinguished, meaning they are cold to the touch with your bare hand, before leaving the area.
