The Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education voted unanimously this past week at the board meeting to approve a policy that will place armed guards at all Silver schools during the next school year. This decision came after the parent surveys, past community meetings and other communication with constituents all were overwhelmingly in favor of the policy. Superintendent Hawkins mentioned that they will take 3 to 6 months to make sure all guards are fully knowledgeable and trained before the policy goes into effect.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will be conducting checkpoints throughout the state this summer to collect biological data and to inspect for wildlife law violations. The Lordsburg Elks Lodge #1813 will be hosting its 9th annual “Splash Out Drugs” event on Monday, June 26th at the Municipal Swimming Pool from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00p.m. There will be free swimming lessons, food, music and much more for ages 0 to 18 and those who bring a canned food item to donate to the Lordsburg food pantry, will get a prize.
Western New Mexico University is presenting a new alumni award named the “Young Alumni Achievement Award” which is intended to highlight the achievements of alumni under the age of 40 who have exemplified ongoing contributions to their communities, multicultural relations and volunteerism. The individual that is selected will be someone who reflects and recognizes the importance of his or her education at WNMU, demonstrates pride in their alma mater and possesses an evident loyalty to the university.
