Western New Mexico University Student, Itzela Darkenwald has created “Choose to Reuse”, a recycling program that WNMU students can use to dispose of items they no longer want. Ms. Darkenwald thought of the idea when she saw students getting rid of items that were still in good condition but no longer wanted. She decided to get The Silver City Gospel Mission involved in the project and they donated boxes that are set up all around campus at different drop zones for students to put their unwanted items in. Items like clothing, toiletries, appliances, cleaning supplies and anything reusable can be dropped off at any time and all donated items will be given to the mission to help those in need.

There were several engine and fire crews from our local district as well as from South Dakota and Montana, a Wildlife Biologist, Fuels/Timber guys and an archaeologist who taught students about wildfire fighting, equipment, tactics, tree education and archaeology. This learning experience gave the students a chance to learn about the different resources the Forest Service provides.
Stream Dynamics, which has been in Silver City for 20 years, recently received a $300,000 grant from the New Mexico Environment Department to help the water management firm expand their assistance to property owners across the area. This program provides a full range of water harvesting, stream restoration and erosion control services for homes, businesses, municipalities and wildlands. The funds received will be used to help repair flood damage that occurred during and after rainstorms and will also allow them to work with property owners to make improvements in and around roadways.
