Western New Mexico University is relaunching its Master of Science in Nursing in Community and Rural/Frontier Health program starting this Fall. According to the Associate Dean of the program, this is the only program in New Mexico and one of the very few in the United States to focus on community and rural/frontier care. The goal is to prepare nurses to become Family Nurse Practitioners and to help meet the need for more health care providers in underserved communities. A BIG Congratulations to The Silver City All-Stars Minor Division team who recently won the New Mexico District 7 baseball championship. The team of 8 to 10 year old boys won with a 11-0 victory over the Copper All-Stars which qualified them for the New Mexico Little League State Tournament in Albuquerque. Good luck at the State Tournament boys!
United Way will be having a “Passport to Financial Success” workshop in Silver City that will run every Wednesday starting July 12th through August 16th. The workshop will be a 6-part financial literacy program to help individuals learn the basics of finances, how to create a budget and how to improve credit scores. The New Mexico State Police participated in the Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE) operation during the 4th of July weekend. The goal of the operation was to help increase motorist safety by reducing the number of crashes across all roadways within the state. Being that the safety of motorists is a big concern, state police will continue the operation throughout the year.
The 38-acre Antelope Fire, located about 16 miles northwest of Winston, NM in the Black Range, was the result of a lightning strike, reported on Tuesday, July 4th. Thanks to the quick response and strong aerial support, crews have established containment lines around all sides of the fire. Crews are working to identify and extinguish sources of heat within the fire perimeter. The Vail Interagency Hotshots, Lone Peak Hotshots, Santiam Modules 1 and 2, and Crew 621 remain assigned to Antelope Fire today.
