At the time of this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total 13,507 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases, an increase of 251 cases. In addition, COVID-19 cases locally impacting the area include: Luna County has risen to 104 cases and 4,296 tests administered; Grant County remained at 24 total cases with 3,090 tests administered; Hidalgo County at 60 total cases with 1,492 tests administered; and Catron County has reported no new changes.
The Cub Fire, located approximately 1-mile northeast of Cub Mountain, near the West Fork of the Gila River was at the time of this report, encompassing 4,365 acres and burning grass, brush and multiple snags. The fire continues with progression on the south and east sections for the fire. The fire behavior is observed as a low intensity creeping surface fire and has reached the West fork of the Gila River on its northern edge with forward progression stopping there.
A final update was issued by the Forest Service Gila National Forest concerning the Good Fire that has reached 17,915 acres and located 1 and ½ miles southwest of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. The fire was lightning caused on June 28th and has had little progression. At this time the fore is at 60% containment.
Two support programs for young families in New Mexico have transitioned from the Department of Health to the Early Childhood Education and Care Department starting on July 1st. The Family Infant Toddler program, founded 30 years ago and the Families First program founded in 1994, will now be serviced through the newly formed cabinet-level agency. The Commons Center for Food Insecurity and Sustainability, located at 501 E 13th Street in Silver City, is giving away a limited amount of free produce boxes to low income families tomorrow, starting at 9:00 A.M.
