The Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to be hosting, once again, this year’s 4th of July’s festivities. The “Lady Liberty ” parade will start at 10:00 a.m. which will then be followed by a Patriotic Freedom Festival at Gough Park with vendors, music, food and more. The Silver City Recreation Center has decided to close its doors due to lack of use. According to the town’s Public Works director, the building is not being used so closing it will allow the town to save money on operating costs. The closing is temporary and the center will likely reopen when the new school year begins. For more information, call 575-388-4640.
The City of Lordsburg invites the community to the “Mom and Pops” Pyrotechnic Show on July 4th, in memory of pyrotechnic expert, Ben Erickson. There will be free swimming for all from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Municipal Swimming Pool and fireworks will begin at dusk. For more information, call 575-542-3421.
The digital magazine, Trips to Discover, recently featured Silver City in their article “15 Most Picturesque Small Towns in New Mexico”. Silver City was recognized for the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Park and for being a town filled with plenty of sunshine and fresh air. It also spoke of Silver City as being a town where you will learn about mining history, Native American art and the great outdoors. The Youths Murals Program of Silver City has been working on restoring different art murals around the community this summer. They completed and updated murals at Penny Park, the Bayard Library and the most recent mural they worked on was at Silver City’s SkatePark. They worked on removing the graffiti and giving the mural a fresh new look, which has not been done in about 10 years.
