The Silver City Public Library will be having an “End of the Summer” party tomorrow, July 28th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be dancing, water play, ice cream and much more. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the library.
Congratulations to Phyliss McDonald and Uriel Retana who were recently recognized by the Lordsburg Board of Education. Ms. McDonald, who has been with the district for 31 years, was presented a certificate of appreciation for her hardwork and dedication to Lordsburg High School and its students. Mr. Retana, a graduating senior, received the New Mexico Boards Association scholarship for demonstrating a high level of leadership, academic achievement and community involvement.
The 988 support crisis line for emotional, mental and substance misuse just celebrated its first anniversary in New Mexico. 988 offers free access to trained crisis counselors who help individuals who are experiencing suicidal, substance abuse, or mental health crisis or any other kind of emotional distress. The crisis line has answered over 21,702 calls and has helped save the lives of 4,732 New Mexicans since it was first launched in 2022. The Gila National Forest has released a new forest order that has changed the length of time for camping to no longer than 14 days in a consecutive 30-day period. The area includes all National Forest Service lands within the boundaries of the Gila National Forest and Apache National Forest. This new order is aimed to help provide for public health and safety and to mitigate impact on natural resources. For more information, visit the Gila National Forest website.
The Gila Native Plant Society is working to create a Master and Interpretive Plan to help improve the Silva Creek Botanical Garden in Silver City. The plan will include a Children’s Pollinator Garden, Ethnobotany Garden, Front Yard Garden, a Life in the Creek Exhibit and a decorative and educational tile mural. These elements are set to be implemented in the upcoming years and the community is encouraged to tour “stations” throughout the garden where volunteers will be available to answer questions regarding the upcoming changes.
