Congratulations to Western New Mexico University student, Margarita Telles who is the first-prize winner in Western’s Academic Writing Contest. Margarita’s paper, “The Adverse Effect of Parent-Child Loss or Separation: A literature Review”, was inspired by her interest in psychological parenting, and the physiological effects a child experiences when they lose contact with a caregiver. Ms. Telles is currently a senior at the university and after graduation she plans on attending graduate school in Counseling.
U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, along with the Senate Appropriations Committee, recently approved the Financial Services-General Government (FSGG) and the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Bills. Both bills will provide funding to over 34 local projects across New Mexico to help provide law enforcement officials and medical providers the resources needed to protect the safety and well-being of its community members. Grant and Hidalgo county will receive a combined $295,000 to help purchase equipment used by law enforcement to safely detect fentanyl and other illicit drugs and to improve officer and community safety. The Village of Santa Clara Action Committee will be having “Movie Night” at Viola Stone Park tomorrow, July 22nd. They will be showing “Home” and the movie will begin when it starts getting dark. The Gila National Forest is seeking public comment on a proposal to conduct vegetation treatments on 31,850 acres of national forest system lands within the Silver City Ranger District. The proposal includes mechanical and hand thinning, herbicide application, and prescribed fire in order to reduce fuels adjacent to the Wildland Urban Interface and catastrophic wildfire risk to communities. Several youth from Hidalgo County recently competed in the 100th Annual New Mexico State 4-H Conference in Las Cruces. The Agronomy team, which focuses on producing and using plants by agriculture for food, fuel, fiber and land conservation, won first place in their division which earned them the state championship title. A big congratulations to team members Francis Racicot, Russell Haught, Journey Sheehan and Leo Kerr on their championship win!
