Silver Consolidated Schools will be giving out free boxes of food on Monday, July 17th. The boxes will be provided by “The Commons” and will be given out from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Silver Schools Administration Office back parking lot. For more information, go to website.
The New Mexico Public Education Department is working in partnership with the Future Focused Education Program, to provide more “real-life” experiences to help boost students’ interest in college and the community. They will be providing programs across New Mexico schools, such as working on homelessness and food insecurity, that will be designed to increase motivation and enable deeper learning. The Luna County Community, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will be having a Blood Drive on Monday, July 17th. Firefighters are responding to numerous new wildfire ignitions across the Gila National Forest resulting from lighting strikes that occurred during recent thunderstorms. The most active fires are the Doe Fire on the Black Ranger District where full suppression response is being mounted and the Snow Fire on the Reserve Ranger District, which have two engines and the Gila Hotshots responding. Other ignitions include Watson Fire near Mogollon Box, Rocky Fire near Sapillo Campground, and several other fires as yet unnamed are widely scattered across the forest. Congratulations to S. Otto Khera, of Western New Mexico University, who was selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to participate in the 2023 E. Kika De La Garza Education Fellows Program in Washington, D.C. The program, which is part of the Hispanic-Serving Institutions National Program, was created to help ensure equal access to programs, services and resources by underserved groups. Mr. Otto is one of 30 faculty members who will spend a week meeting with leaders from different USDA agencies to learn about national and regional issues and will collaborate with top scientists from the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service.
