Whitewater Creek Trail #207 is being restored thanks to the Gila National Forest Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM) and Forest Service Trail crews. The trail was severely damaged by post-fire flooding after the Whitewater Baldy Fire in 2012 and has been impassable since then. Recently, crews have been removing rocks, damaged staircases, metal railings and more to help rebuild the trail foundation. Forest Service crews will continue to work on the trail so it can restore reasonable public access.
The construction for the new Deming City Hall, which started in 2021, is near completion and is set to be more “customer friendly”. The new hall will feature wide-open spaces , a courtyard with benches, PA system, interactive activities for children and a drive-thru for paying bills. The new location, which will be at 1205 East Pine Street, is scheduled to open in mid-August.
Silver Consolidated Schools is looking for Grant County educational programs that would like to be a part of their “Back to School” staff meeting that will take place in August. According to Superintendent Hawkins, the meeting will be to provide local information and resources regarding social, emotional and mental health issues. Also, this will give education focused programs the opportunity to connect with teachers for classroom programming support. Congratulations to the Silver City Little League Junior Girls Softball team who were recently named the New Mexico Junior League District 7 champions. The 11 to 12 year old girls beat Carlsbad with a 15-0 victory. They are scheduled to play this evening in Albuquerque for the state championship. Good luck ladies!
The New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority recently approved $1,380,892 for the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) program. HOPWA provides assistance to low-income individuals with HIV/AIDS by providing tenant based rental assistance, short term rent, utility and mortgage assistance and permanent placement housing. In 2022-23, the program was able to assist 263 individuals located all around New Mexico and hopes to help more people in the years to come. For more information on the program, go to website.
