The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District plans to continue implementing Phase I of the Bear Creek to Signal Peak Collaborative Restoration project around the Little Walnut and Gomez Peak day use areas into the new year, using chainsaws and heavy equipment. According to a news release, “the project aims to reduce wildfire threat to communities, improve watersheds, and wildlife habitats.” In addition, the project treatment areas were determined as priorities  in the 2000 Grant County Community Wildlife Protection Plan, Grant County Soil and Water Conservation District’s Long Range Resources Plan, New Mexico Forestry Division Forestry Action Plan in 2020, and the Gila National Forest Plan 2021 draft.

The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society will be kicking off their Winter Film Series this month at the Santa Clara Armory. The series is entitled “How the West Was Fun” featuring films created between the 1930’s and the early 21st century. The series will run every Thursday evening beginning on January 12th, concluding on March 23rd. Doors at the Armory will open at 6:00 P.M. with screening at 6:30. National non-profit, Wreaths Across America has announced their 2023 theme, “Serve and Succeed.” Last year, more than 2.7 million veterans’ wreaths were placed by volunteers on headstones at 3,702 participating locations, including locally at Fort Bayard National Cemetery, in honor of the service and sacrifices made for freedom, with each name said out loud. Wreaths Across America volunteers work year-round to ensure military laid to rest are remembered, their families and living veterans are honored, and the next generation is taught about the value of freedom. This year, National Wreaths Across America Day is scheduled for Saturday, December 16.
