Gila Trails Info has announced the reopening of two trails near the Gila National Forest. Big Timber Trail #95 has reopened after decades of deferred maintenance, offering access to Apache Creek and winding through stands of old-growth ponderosa pine. The trail features springs that typically flow most years; however, due to current drought conditions, it is best suited for day use from Rocky Canyon Campground. In addition, the Whitewater Trail from Hummingbird Saddle to Redstone, connecting to Redstone Trail #206, is now open but currently limited to foot traffic only.

The Hidalgo Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has established the Improvement Cost Share Assistance Program to support farmers and ranchers within its boundaries through financial assistance. The program is designed to promote the implementation of soil, water, and vegetative conservation practices that provide long-term benefits to land, wildlife, livestock, and landowners. Eligible projects will be funded on a 50/50 cost-share basis, with the district contributing up to $7,000 per producer. For additional information, interested producers may contact Aimee Samuel at 505-469-5922.

In New Mexico news:

The New Mexico Department of Health has issued a public health order to ensure statewide access to the COVID-19 vaccine. The order follows reports that some pharmacies would not administer the vaccine in New Mexico unless it was recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a federal advisory group to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved updated COVID-19 vaccine formulations, though with a narrower scope than in previous seasons. State health officials anticipate the updated vaccines will begin arriving in New Mexico within the coming weeks.
