The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District, is preparing to initiate the Redstone prescribed fire project as early as October 1st. The specific ignition date will be determined based on prevailing weather conditions, fuel availability, and the readiness of firefighting resources. This 571-acre prescribed fire project will be located in the Signal Peak area, bordered to the north by Meadow Creek Road (Forest Road 149), to the east by a combination of handline and Forest Road 4255, to the south by Signal Peak Road (Forest Road 154), and to the west by Highway 15. The primary objective of this project is to mitigate the risk of catastrophic wildfires that could adversely affect wildlife habitats, recreational areas, and adjacent private properties by reducing hazardous fuel loads within and around the Signal Fire burn scar. To ensure public safety and health during this operation, an area closure will be implemented that encompasses all roads within the unit boundary.

The Bayard City Council recently approved the acquisition of 675 acres of land from Foy Inc., presented by the company’s president, Carney Foy. This property, which extends to Santa Clara and spans both sides of the highway, will allow Bayard to double its size and better manage its growth. The Director of the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments will be assisting with the funding and facilitating the purchase. The City of Bayard anticipates that this purchase will serve as a significant opportunity for growth and development.
