Congratulations to Mrs. Diana Ingalls Leyba on her well-deserved recognition as one of the distinguished recipients of the “2024 Governor’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts”. As a talented mixed-media artist, gallery owner, and founder of the Youth Mural Program (YMP), Mrs. Leyba has made a profound impact on the community of Silver City and beyond. Over the past 21 years, her program has empowered at-risk youth to create over 85 murals, enriching their understanding of local history and culture while engaging thousands of young people in the arts. This honor reflects her dedication to fostering creativity and celebrating the rich diversity of New Mexico.

The Santa Clara Action Committee is excited to announce the return of the Halloween Decoration Contest! Starting on October 1st, residents can showcase their creativity with lights, inflatables, and any other spooky decorations, all vying for the title of the best-decorated house. The winner, decided by committee members on October 21st, will receive a gift card and be featured in next month’s newsletter, with photos of their home and other decorated houses shared on the Village’s Facebook page. There’s no need to sign up—just decorate your house, and you’ll automatically be entered into the competition.

Former Lordsburg resident Coach Armando “Abe” Estrada was recently inducted into the Albuquerque High School Hall of Fame. A legendary figure in New Mexico high school basketball, Estrada earned the nickname “Secretary of Defense” for his strategic coaching since beginning his career in the Albuquerque area. His dedication to the sport was further recognized in 1985 when he was honored as the Cable Television Coach of the Year. Throughout his career, Estrada has devoted countless hours to nurturing both male and female athletes, leaving a lasting impact on the community and the sport. Congratulations to Mr. Estrada.

As a reminder, The Gila National Forest is set to initiate the Redstone prescribed fire project as early as Monday October 7th, depending on weather and fuel conditions. Ignitions for the prescribed fire are anticipated to take place over a two-day period. To ensure public safety, an area closure will be implemented starting October 7th and will remain in effect until October 18th, unless lifted earlier. During the prescribed fire operations, a pilot car and road guards will manage traffic in a single lane on Highway 15 to protect both firefighters and the public.
