The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, and the New Mexico Livestock Board are urging hunters to take precautions to help prevent the spread of New World screwworm among wildlife, livestock, pets, and humans. New World screwworm is a foreign animal disease that poses a serious threat to animal and public health. The larvae of the screwworm fly infest open wounds, feeding on living tissue, and are found only on live or recently deceased animals. Officials also caution that improper handling of game meat can lead to the development of other maggots in muscle tissue, even when New World screwworm is not present.
