The New Mexico Environment Department has issued a cautionary advisory for visitors to Quemado Lake, Snow Lake, and Hopewell Lake due to the presence of harmful algae blooms (HABs). These blooms, which may appear blue, bright green, brown, or red, often resemble scum or floating grass clippings on the water’s surface and can produce toxins dangerous to both humans and animals. The department advises the public to avoid contact with water that appears discolored, has a foul odor, or looks scummy—particularly if it resembles grass clippings, thick paint, or displays pea-green, blue-green, or brownish-red coloration. More information about HABs can be found on their website.
