On Monday, November 11th, the country will honor veterans of all wars with Veterans Day, a national holiday of observance that coincides with the last designated fee-free day of 2024 for federal public lands. The Gila National Forest is advising all those who plan to visit the forest on Veterans Day to do their part in protecting these shared public lands. They encourage everyone to pack out their trash and note that fire danger is currently classified as “high.” Visitors are also urged to exercise caution with vehicles and fire by avoiding parking hot vehicles over tall grasses, ensuring chains do not drag, properly disposing of cigarettes, and never leaving a campfire unattended.
Western New Mexico University has launched a survey to assess food security challenges and opportunities within its community. This initiative includes plans for developing vegetable gardens, greenhouses, and hoop houses on campus to provide fresh produce for students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, a composting system will be established to convert the university’s food waste and yard trimmings into valuable topsoil for the campus farm, promoting sustainability and closing the loop on organic waste. The responses to the community survey will help identify key areas for initiative development, inform campus programming, and enhance support for local food producers and food pantries. Interested individuals can take the survey by visiting website.
