During the recent Grant County Commissioners meeting, a majority of commissioners voted to adopt a plan for a new $39.7 million courthouse—pending the availability of funding—after reviewing two options: a $24.3 million reconstruction of the existing courthouse and the construction of a fully compliant facility behind the historic building to create an expanded judicial complex. The meeting also featured a proclamation honoring the late former Commissioner Javier “Harvey” Salas, recognizing his enduring contributions to the community, including his role in the development of Bataan Park and his longstanding advocacy for pay equity among county employees.
The Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument invites visitors to experience Stars over the Gila, an evening night-sky program offered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday through November 30. Hosted in the visitor center parking area, the program provides a rare opportunity to explore the wonders of the night sky amid the quiet beauty of the canyon and some of the darkest skies in New Mexico. There will be no sessions held on November 27 or 28, and pets are not permitted during night-sky activities.
The Hidalgo County Commission met in regular session and approved a $27,000 DWI grant agreement with the New Mexico Department of Finance. The Commission also authorized “Amendment No. 4” to the Inmate Health and Mental Healthcare Agreement with Roadrunner Health Services. In addition, staff received approval to solicit bids for construction services related to an addition to the Hidalgo Fire Building, a project funded through a $500,000 New Mexico Fire Protection Grant. The Commission’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 10.
