Silver Consolidated Schools recently welcomed Mrs. Deana Davis as the new principal of Harrison Schmitt Elementary School. Mrs. Davis brings a wealth of experience from her various educational leadership roles at the Cobre Consolidated School District and from her most recent position serving as an elementary principal in Deming Public Schools. Her diverse experience across multiple campuses has enabled her to develop a well-rounded approach to school leadership, characterized by a commitment to data-driven decision-making, strategic planning, and fostering strong relationships within school communities.
The Commons: Center for Food Security and Sustainability recognized Paula Makara in their “Volunteer Spotlight” for October. Paula volunteers in various capacities, including pantry box packing, the Choose Your Own Pantry initiative, and delivering Hachita pantry boxes. Additionally, she prepares desserts for and serves at neighborhood dinners. Her dedication and positive spirit have helped make a significant impact, leading to her recognition for going above and beyond to help others at The Commons. Congratulations to Paula.
The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District, has recently completed parking upgrades at three popular recreation areas: Dragonfly Trailhead, Bear Creek Continental Divide Trailhead, and the Gomez Peak picnic pavilion. The upgrades include expanded gravel parking areas, improved drainage, and new signage, all of which are now available for public use at Dragonfly Trailhead and the Bear Creek access to the Continental Divide Trail. Additionally, users of the Gomez Peak Picnic Pavilion will notice that a contractor has recently finished repaving the driveway and parking area, enhancing public safety and improving site access.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Hidalgo County Playas Research and Training Center’s (PRTC) leadership and innovation in research and training focused on physical security. County leaders, community members, and New Mexico Tech staff kicked off the celebration with tours of the training facilities and demonstrations of various research projects conducted at PRTC. Additionally, PRTC honored the Hidalgo County 4-H with the “Friend of Playas” award, recognizing the NMSU Cooperative Extension Service for its partnership with NM Tech in STEAM initiatives. This milestone reflects years of hard work and dedication to advancing national security and research efforts.
