On November 12th, the Gila National Forest, Reserve Ranger District began burning accumulated slash at the SU and Gilita community slash disposal sites, as well as 427 acres of post-timber sale slash piles resulting from the Doe Gun timber sale. The Doe Gun slash piles are situated along National Forest System Road (NFSR) 141, on the west side of Bull Basin Canyon, about 11 miles south-southeast of Reserve. The SU slash disposal site is located off New Mexico Highway 12, approximately 4 miles west of Reserve, while the Gilita slash disposal site is off Snow Lake Road on Gilita Ridge, about 22 miles south-southeast of Reserve. These prescribed fire activities are expected to continue through the end of the year, depending on weather, fuel conditions, and resource availability.
The WNMU Foundation and the Western Institute of Lifelong Learning (WILL) recently hosted a signing event to announce the creation of the WILL Scholarship for Lifelong Learners. The scholarship reflects WILL’s deep commitment to community engagement and lifelong learning, acknowledging that the student population is not solely composed of first-generation learners. Like most scholarship endowments, the WILL Scholarship for Lifelong Learners will be invested to generate interest before any awards are made. This scholarship will be available to both undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of whether they are enrolled on a full-time or part-time basis.
The Luna County Health Council will offer CPR training on Monday, November 18th, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Luna County Courthouse. The goal of the training is to help provide an opportunity for community members to learn life-saving skills. The training is free of charge, though prior registration is required for participation. The City of Lordsburg has made significant additions to its equipment inventory with the support of $526,000 in capital outlay funds granted by the New Mexico Legislature. The newly purchased assets include a 2024 Ford F250 ¾-ton 4×4 pickup, a 2023 Ford F150 long bed pickup, a vacuum truck, and a mini excavator. These items will be deployed by the city’s maintenance department to enhance operational efficiency. The investment reflects a strategic effort to improve the city’s infrastructure and maintenance capabilities.
