The Luna County Road Department will begin a chip seal operation on Geranio Road SE, located south of NM 549 at Akela, on Monday, November 17. Motorists are advised to remain alert for flaggers, road closures, posted detour signs, and areas with fresh oil and chips during construction to ensure their safety and that of road construction crews. The Silver City Gospel Mission donated $1,250 in gift cards to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office in support of its annual Thanksgiving Baskets program. Organized each year by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, the initiative distributes baskets filled with food and supplies to help families enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. This contribution is to help reflect the strong collaboration between local nonprofits and law enforcement, working together to ensure vulnerable families in Grant County receive meaningful holiday assistance.
The Gila National Forest plans to conduct prescribed fire operations on Monday, November 17, pending all required approvals. Planned activities include burning the community slash pit near the Kingston Work Center in the Black Range District, located approximately 1.5 miles west of Kingston. For public safety, these areas may be closed for several days, and visitors are advised to watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire locations before and during operations. The work is expected to be completed on Monday, with monitoring of the area continuing throughout the following week.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for November 19 to mark the completion of the first phase of the US 180 Four-Lane Safety Improvement Project. The $41.1 million project expanded US 180 from two to four lanes between Bayard and Hurley, removed the Hurley overpass, realigned the roadway over existing railroad tracks, and added a new crossing at Pit Access Road. Phase 2 design—covering approximately 15 miles from Hurley to south of the railroad crossing at the NM 61 junction—is expected to be completed by the end of the year, while Phase 3 will extend the four-lane expansion approximately 18 miles from the Grant County line to Deming. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the intersection of US 180 and Carrasco Avenue (milepost 127).
