During the recent Silver City Town Council meeting, officials discussed the city’s rising costs, including the decision to halt sponsorship of community events and the potential for another increase in sanitation rates. The council emphasized that essential services will remain secure while the city implements stricter financial oversight, including reviewing contracts, managing overtime, and carefully evaluating future spending and grant commitments to ensure fiscal responsibility, transparency, and continued public service.

The Women and Newborn Services team at Gila Regional Medical Center has earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation from Baby-Friendly USA, marking a major milestone in maternal and infant care for the region. This international recognition highlights the hospital’s commitment to supporting mothers and newborns through the highest standards of breastfeeding support and education. The designation is awarded to facilities that follow the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding- practices endorsed by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to promote healthy infant feeding from the very beginning of life. 

A piece of Deming’s visual history is being revived as local artist and educator Jesse Kriegel restores the historic Lee mural in the downtown alley between Hearts Desire and The Chop Shop. Deming MainStreet recently announced that Jesse, a board member and art teacher, has begun carefully restoring the brick advertisement to bring back its original appearance. Known for highlighting local history and culture through public art, Jesse has created several murals across Deming and Luna County, including works at the former Radio Shack building and Luna County Courthouse Park.

Beginning this tax year, New Mexico is implementing a proportional property tax exemption for veterans with service-connected disabilities ranging from 10% to 100%, based on their federal disability rating. The change expands upon the previous full exemption that applied only to veterans with a 100% disability rating and follows voter approval of New Mexico Constitutional Amendment 1 in 2024. The exemption applies to the primary residence of the veteran or their surviving spouse.  Applications are due by May 1.
