As part of the ongoing national search for the next president of Western New Mexico University (WNMU), town hall sessions will be held on the WNMU Silver City campus. These sessions are designed to gather input from the community regarding the key characteristics, challenges, and opportunities that should guide the selection of the university’s 16th president. There will be two sessions, the first on Tuesday, July 29th and the second on Wednesday, July 30th. Both sessions will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the J. Cloyd Miller Library. Community members are encouraged to attend. 

Deming Public Schools has announced Nicholas Wohlgemuth as the new Superintendent for the 2025–2026 school year. Mr. Wohlgemuth brings a strong background in education, having started his career as a social studies teacher before advancing into leadership roles, including assistant principal, principal, and most recently, Director of Secondary Schools in Gadsden Independent School District. His vision for the district emphasizes a shared commitment to supporting, challenging, and preparing every student for life beyond graduation—whether through college enrollment, career opportunities, or military service.

The NMSU Luna County Extension and 4-H Office has announced the 2025 State 4-H Photo Contest, inviting all 4-H members to showcase their photography skills. Participants may submit film or digital photos by mail or through Facebook by the deadline of August 1st. An overall winner, selected by a panel of judges, will receive a rosette and a $100 cash prize. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) New Mexico State Office is currently accepting land nominations for competitive geothermal leasing in anticipation of the next lease sale, tentatively scheduled for March 2026. It is important to note that submitted nominations are not automatically included in the sale, and the BLM cannot guarantee the inclusion of nominated lands.
