Want to receive Public Safety Alerts? By using the “My Alerts” app, The Town of Silver City is able to send alerts via text message, email, paper or voice mail to residents regarding emergency alerts and severe weather warnings. This system is intended to be used for emergency incidents related to specific hazards that require action to be taken such as evacuations, shelter in place and more. It can also be used for non-emergency incidents including significant transportation problems with prolonged impacts or ongoing police or fire activity. The High Desert Humane Society in Silver City will be having their monthly reduced rate rabies vaccination clinic tomorrow, July 13th. They will be offering a wide variety of vaccines including one and two year rabies vaccines for cats and dogs. This will be a drive through clinic and will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at 3050 South Cougar Way.
Luna County 4-H Club members recently competed at New Mexico State University for the 4-H State Competition. Fourteen students from Luna County participated in various events, including livestock judging, public speaking and robotics, showing the diverse talents and dedication of each student. Congratulations to the Luna County team, who placed in the top 5 in the Entomology category.
Last in our News is an update on the Lolo and Ridge Fire:
The Lolo Fire is 412 acres with 39% containment along the southern perimeter as of Thursday, July 11th. Tasks for this area will include patrols and maintaining control features where crews have completed mop-up work which included mitigating hazards and hotspots along the fire boundary. Crews will also be performing structure protection for private property north of the fire and reducing fuels along roads that may be used as containment features. The primary source of fire activity will be on the north and east side as fire continues to back down to areas accessible for firefighters to engage it.
Fire activity on the Ridge Fire area remains low as of early this morning, Friday July 12th and minimal fire activity is expected throughout today as relative humidity remains low. The fire has continued to burn with low intensity to the south and east through the Gila Wilderness and Cooper Canyon. To provide information and answer questions about the Ridge Fire, the Southwest Incident Management Team 4 will be hosting a community open house at the Willow Creek Ranch tomorrow, July 13th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
