The Town of Silver City Council will convene a Special Council Meeting on Wednesday, January 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grant County Administration Center. Agenda items are expected to include a Police Department update, a review of the Town of Silver City Rules of Procedure, the Mayor’s appointment of a Councilor for District 1, and the Mayor’s appointments to boards and commissions for Council consideration. The meeting is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend.
Silver Consolidated Schools has announced that the closure and consolidation of Jose Barrios and Sixth Street elementary schools at the end of the current school year will result in administrative changes, including two retirements. Students and staff from the closing schools will transition to G.W. Stout or Harrison Schmitt Elementary, while all sixth-grade students citywide will move to La Plata Middle School and Jose Barrios Principal Robert Trujillo will retire after 30 years with the district. Associate Superintendent Louis Alvarez will also retire but will return in the fall as assistant principal at Harrison Schmitt, where Heather Holguin will become principal, while Deana Davis will move to Stout Elementary as co-principal with Jason Ping. Also, Joyce Barela will be named permanent principal at Silver High School.
Lordsburg Mayor Glenda Greene recently issued a proclamation honoring local World War II hero and longtime Lordsburg resident Rudy Chavez on the occasion of his 100th birthday. In recognition of his remarkable life and distinguished service, the City of Lordsburg proudly proclaimed January 5, as “Rodolfo Chavez Day.” This designation serves as a lasting tribute to Mr. Chavez’s courage, sacrifice, resilience, and service—values that reflect both the spirit of the nation and the character of the Lordsburg community. Open enrollment for the New Mexico health insurance marketplace, BeWellNM, is currently open and will continue through January 15. Individuals who enroll between December 31 and January 15 will have coverage beginning February 1. To qualify for enrollment in a BeWellNM health insurance plan during the open enrollment period, individuals must reside in New Mexico, not have access to health insurance through their employer or a parent’s employer, be ineligible for Medicaid or Medicare, and not be incarcerated.
