Leaders from the Associated Students of Western New Mexico University (ASWNMU) recently traveled to Santa Fe to advocate for funding requests made to the New Mexico Legislature. ASWNMU is seeking $300,000 for upgrades to the university’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and $100,000 for improvements to the residence halls. The requested $300,000 would support the establishment of remote connections between the computer labs in Deming and Gallup and the university’s IT systems on campus. Additionally, ASWNMU is requesting funding for the installation of water bottle filling stations and security cameras in the residence halls.

The Silver City Watershed Keepers is seeking volunteers to assist with the San Vicente Creek restoration project tomorrow, March 1st at 10 a.m. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to properly water and care for newly planted native trees and shrubs near the Old Chinese Gardens, LLC, ensuring their growth and survival through the hot spring and summer months. The Animas Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter participated in events this past weekend at Las Cruces High School, where they achieved qualification with one Agronomy team, one Horticulture team, and two Farm Business Management teams. These teams will advance to compete at the New Mexico State FFA Career Development Events in Las Cruces, scheduled for April 1st through 4th. In addition, they will participate in a contest this Saturday at Hot Springs High School in Truth or Consequences, followed by their final contest at Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) in Roswell on March 14th. In Deming news: 

As a reminder, The City of Deming has contracted RT Electric to carry out the Gold Street Maintenance Reduction and Signal Lighting Project, which is currently under construction. The project’s goals include reducing Gold Street to a single lane in each direction, improving traffic signal synchronization, and enhancing pedestrian safety to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project is expected to take between nine and twelve months to complete, contingent upon weather conditions.
