Interested in learning about pruning fruit trees? The Grant County Neighborhood Orchards Project will be having a “Pruning Workshop and Clean-Up” tomorrow, February 24th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants will learn how to prune fruit trees and will do a quick clean-up of the orchard where they will be able to cut from the 16 fruit trees at the orchard. The workshop will take place at the Gough Park Orchard and is free to all those interested.
As a reminder, registration for the Grant County online workforce development training classes is still open. These classes are free and will give participants the opportunity to earn badges in Weatherization and Energy Efficient courses that are recognized throughout the country. Classes are open to anyone interested in learning more about weatherization and energy efficiency for their home or business. Participants must register by March 15th. The Town of Silver City Public Works Department is getting ready for a new season of road improvements, including the completion of road improvements on 32nd Street. Improvements to 32nd Street should be completed by the end of March and in April, the Town of Silver City will begin Phase IV improvements to Little Walnut Road, just north of Chavez Lane to Jack Frost Road. Work will include new pavement, improved drainage, bicycle lanes, ADA-compliant sidewalks, signage and lane stripping.
Freeport-McMoRan’s New Mexico operations is offering scholarships to high school students residing in Grant County who are interested in attending New Mexico Tech’s Summer STEM program. The program will provide a five-day opportunity for participants to collaborate with fellow students, faculty and staff who share the same interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, Entrepreneurship and Math. The scholarship will cover the full registration cost for students to participate in the program once accepted. Deadline to apply is April 30th. In Lordsburg News: The City of Lordsburg will be having a Veterans Benefits Seminar for all veterans and their family members tomorrow, February 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #1813 in Lordsburg. The seminar will offer information about VA benefits and the PACT ACT from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
