The Commons in Silver City will be having a free “Friday Night Dinner” this evening, December 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. They will be having Old Fashioned Goulash along with music, fun and more. All community members are welcome to attend. 

The Animas Public School District (APS) has received $40,000 as part of The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division’s Outdoor Equity Fund. The school plans on using the funding to help provide students with environmental and climate education related events through school trips and activities that venture outdoors. The goal is to help encourage students to be globally-minded and active children and to help them understand the impact their actions have on the environment, emphasizing the conservation and preservation of the ecosystem. 

The Town of Hurley has announced that effective January 1st there will be some changes to the trash pick up process. The town has purchased new trash carts and will be changing to an automated trash collection service. Each residential account will receive one 96 gallon cart that will be delivered by the Town’s Maintenance staff. Trash collection for residents will be on Monday’s and for businesses trash collection will take place on Mondays and Fridays. Residents will be responsible for making sure their trash is in front of their residence away from vehicles, mailboxes, fences, etc. For more information, contact the Hurley Town Hall. 

The Gila National Forest is reminding all visitors that in order to provide for public health and safety and to mitigate impacts on natural resources, camping for longer than 14 days in a consecutive 30-day period is prohibited. This includes all National Forest Service lands within the boundaries of the Gila National Forest. This order will remain in effect until May 2025. For more information, visit website.

The City of Lordsburg will be conducting a free large trash pickup day on Friday, January 5th. The maintenance crew will be going around and picking up any large items or items that are not allowed to go in the dumpsters. If you have items you are wanting the maintenance crew to come pick up, contact Lordsburg City Hall no later than Thursday, January 4th at 5:00 p.m.

Last in our News: As part of “America’s State Parks First Day Hikes” event that takes place every year, 11 New Mexico State Parks will be having free guided hikes and polar plunges on January 1st. Some of the parks that will be participating will be Elephant Butte Lake, Pancho Villa State Park, Sumner Lake and Bottomless Lake. First Day Hikes give hikers the opportunity to choose hikes that fit their comfort level  and are free and open to the public no matter your skill level.
