The Luna County DWI Program has announced new funding to support substance-free events for local youth. These activities are designed to offer safe, enjoyable alternatives to alcohol and drug use, while encouraging positive lifestyle choices. The DWI Program’s goal is to empower young people by providing engaging, substance-free opportunities, contributing to a safer and healthier environment in Luna County.

Toys for Tots, an annual event aimed at providing Christmas gifts to children who might not otherwise receive one, was held at the Santa Clara Armory last weekend. The event, organized each year by the Gaffney-Oglesby Marine Corps League in Grant County, reached a significant milestone, with 1,754 children benefiting from the toy distribution. The Gaffney-Oglesby Marine Corps League would like to express their gratitude to all volunteers and generous donors who contributed toys and cash to make the event a success.
The Gila National Forest recently welcomed Nick Delgado, a newly certified federal law enforcement officer from Silver City to its ranks. Mr. Delgado fills a long-vacant law enforcement position within the forest, enhancing emergency response, public safety, and natural resource protection services. A former Sergeant with the Silver City Police Department, Mr. Delgado completed his federal law enforcement training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in 2024 and finished his field training just last week. Now fully certified, Officer Delgado is stationed at the Wilderness Ranger District in Mimbres, where he will bolster law enforcement presence across the forest.
Silver City’s Pick It Up-Toss No Mas program extends its heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who dedicated their time and effort during the cleanup events throughout the year. Thanks to their hard work, a total of 9,344 pounds of litter and debris were removed in 2024 from various locations, including Big Ditch Park, Penny Park, Little Walnut, Highway 180, and Virginia Street Park. The volunteers’ contributions not only highlight the community’s strong spirit of involvement but also emphasize the importance of maintaining a clean environment. Their efforts have made Silver City a safer, cleaner, and more beautiful place for all to enjoy.
