A community meeting with Silver City Mayor Ken Ladner is scheduled for Monday, August 11th, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Forum Area of Miller Library on the campus of Western New Mexico University (WNMU). Community members are invited to stop by at any time during the event to share ideas and discuss opportunities to further improve Silver City. Complimentary coffee, soda, and cakes will be provided by WNMU.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Luna, Grant, and Hidalgo Counties is encouraging community members to become advocates for abused and neglected children in the foster care system. CASA volunteers play a critical role in safeguarding the well-being of these children by serving as their voice in court proceedings and ensuring that their best interests are consistently represented. Those interested in becoming a CASA volunteer can call 575-694-5719 for Luna and Hidalgo Counties or 575-694-5721 for Grant County.

Animas Public Schools began the 2025–2026 academic year with significant leadership changes, including the appointment of Robbi Coker as Assistant Superintendent and Kelly Morris as the new Principal, following the retirement of longtime educator Kathy Adams. Over the summer, the district also completed several maintenance upgrades, notably the restoration of the “Pit.” Through various grants and programs that will be offered this year, students will have access to a range of incentives and experiential learning opportunities designed to enhance education both inside and outside the classroom.

The Land of Enchantment Young Ambassador Program is currently seeking motivated high school students entering their junior or senior year for the 2025–2026 school year to support the Governor’s initiative to clean and enhance the natural beauty of New Mexico. Selected Ambassadors will engage in community-based projects throughout the academic year and collaborate with peers on a statewide leadership and engagement initiative. Participants will receive training in project management and community leadership, gaining valuable hands-on experience in organizing and leading projects. The deadline to apply is August 15th.
