During the Town of Silver City Regular Council Meeting, Councilor Bencomo provided an update on the Grant County Safety Lighting Project. The New Mexico Department of Transportation plans to enhance safety by installing additional lighting along Highway 180, extending from 14th Street to Santa Clara. The project will also include new signage to help manage speed limits, improved road striping, and the installation of flashing speed radar detectors. Notably, some of the lighting upgrades will be placed at key intersections, starting from Delk Drive and continuing toward Santa Clara. The improvements are expected to take place later this year.

The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society will resume its Fall Film Series with the award-winning television mini-series “Centennial” beginning Thursday, September 5th. Screenings will be held every Thursday evening at the Santa Clara Armory through November 21st, with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and movies starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted. To support students as they return to school and ensure they are equipped with the necessary supplies, Molina Healthcare of New Mexico and State Representative Jenifer Jones have partnered to assist Deming Public Schools. Molina Healthcare has generously donated spiral notebooks, backpacks, paper, and crayon packages, while Representative Jones has provided a matching monetary contribution to aid in the procurement of additional back-to-school essentials. These collaborative efforts are aimed to enhance the school’s capacity to address students’ educational needs effectively.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Museum will host special guests tomorrow, August 31st, as members of the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) make a pilgrimage to honor the Japanese held in the internment camp in Lordsburg during World War II. The museum will welcome two groups from Santa Fe and Albuquerque for this significant event, which will include an informative program at 2:00 p.m., featuring an overview of the historical context of 1942 and 1943 in Lordsburg. Additionally, the program will include a report on other sites of confinement throughout New Mexico and a panel discussion to help further the understanding of this important chapter in history. This event is free and open to the public.
