A new mural has been added to the Town of Silver City’s public art collection in the downtown historic district. Located along the Kelly Street boundary of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the mural was inspired, created, and painted by several parishioners. The artwork depicts children from the local community, celebrating the diversity of races, cultures, and interests that enrich the town. Earlier this week, the mural was formally dedicated, marking its place as a meaningful addition to both the church and the community.

At its recent meeting, the Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education voted to accept the Elementary School Consolidation Feasibility Study and proceed with the next steps to ensure a strong and sustainable future for the district. Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Sixth Street and Jose Barrios Elementary Schools will be closed as part of the consolidation plan. This effort will allow the district to make more effective use of underutilized space caused by more than a decade of declining enrollment, generate savings of more than $10 million over the next five years, and enhance academic opportunities and services at the schools that remain in operation.

The Lordsburg Hidalgo County Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the grand opening of Hidalgo Horse Haven. This new addition to the Hidalgo County Fairgrounds is part of the EHCO Partners’ Explore Hidalgo County Outdoors initiative, spearheaded by SPIRIT of Hidalgo in collaboration with Hidalgo County, the NMEDD Outdoor Recreation Division, and the NM Youth Conservation Corps. The project includes the installation of 20 modern horse stalls, providing a valuable resource for fair participants, horseback hunters, and travelers along the interstate.

As the nation prepares for the Labor Day holiday weekend, the Gila National Forest is reminding visitors of the importance of preventing human-caused wildfires while enjoying public lands. Fireworks are strictly prohibited in the forest. Drivers are reminded not to park or drive on dry grass, as hot exhaust systems can easily ignite a fire. Where campfires are permitted, visitors should use existing fire rings, never leave fires unattended, and always check with the nearest ranger station or online resources for current fire restrictions or closures before traveling.
