The Gila National Forest has announced an indefinite moratorium on new Special Use Permits for guided hunting in response to reported crowding conflicts between permitted outfitters, private hunters, and other forest visitors. The decision aims to support safe, high-quality recreational experiences for all users while maintaining viable business opportunities for currently permitted hunting guides. Existing permits will not be revoked; however, overall use is expected to gradually decrease through attrition as permits are relinquished or expire without renewal. This approach is intended to balance recreational access with sustainable management of forest resources.
