Come join Silver City’s Pick It Up-Toss No Mas for their “Gila Earth Day” community cleanup tomorrow, April 13th. Those interested in volunteering are to meet at the Grant County Community Foundation parking lot at 9:00 a.m. Trash bags, gloves, snacks and free t-shirts to new volunteers will be provided. After the cleanup, all trash and recyclables will be recorded, and those with the most trash collected will be rewarded.

Interested in planting your own fruits and vegetables? The Southwest New Mexico Seed Library is giving out packages of free fruit and vegetable seeds to those interested in gardening and planting their own food. Some of the locations to pick up free seeds in Grant County are: The Commons, Silver City Public Library, Single Socks, Bayard Public Library and the Gila Library. The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District plans on igniting portions of the planned prescribed fire for the 2,010-acre Cameron Creek Prescribed Fire project beginning April 15th. The project will be completed in two phases with the first phase including fire along the perimeter to reduce and eliminate fuels near roads and trails. During phase two, which will take place late May or early June, a Heli-torch will be used for aerial ignitions to introduce fire to the interior of the project area. The Cameron Creek project is located along the west side of Grant County Road 1-152/Forest Road 536. For public safety, trail guards will direct visitors away from the prescribed fire project. 

In honor of “Equity Fund Friday”, the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division is highlighting the Silver City Youth Murals Program, which was a 2022 Outdoor Equity Fund recipient. Since its founding in 2003, the Youth Murals Program has had thousands of youth participate in mural projects and artwork that connect them to local history and the natural environment. The program has also allowed youth to show appreciation for the outdoors through beautification and awareness for the  community that surrounds them.

In hopes of preserving the rich heritage of Deming, city employees recently completed the replacement of the original flooring at the Historic Deming Luna County Mimbres Museum. The restoration project involved refurbishing the building’s ground-level floor, maintaining its original flooring that dates back over more than a century. The museum spans approximately 25,000 square feet of exhibition space across three buildings, including large outdoor exhibit spaces and stands as a testament to Deming’s rich history.
