AARP, in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, will prepare and file Federal and/or New Mexico tax returns for taxpayers of any age and income level at NO CHARGE, in Silver City and in Bayard. According to a news release, tax laws have changed in New Mexico allowing most low-income taxpayers earning under $36,000 per year to receive money back. In addition, seniors over 65 who make less than $16,000 and pay rent or property taxes may qualify to receive rebates. AARP tax packets can be picked up at the following locations: Silver City Public Library, Silver City Senior Center, Cliff Post Office, Cliff Senior Center, Lordsburg Senior Center, or the Grant County Administration Building, the Mimbres Roundup Lodge, Bayard Public Library, and Santa Clara City Hall.
In state Legislative news, NM- HB 62 passed the House with a vote of 65 to 1. The Bill would create the “Grants Opportunity Council” to support New Mexican municipalities to research and apply for federal and other grants, making it easier for rural and underserved communities crucial funding. The bill also creates a $1 million Grants Matching Fund, administered by the Department of Finance & Administration to help municipalities qualify for grants requiring a match. The council and fund will prioritize supporting rural and underserved communities, which need more resources and assistance throughout the grant writing and application process.
The Deming Optimist Club has disbanded after decades of service to Deming and Luna County. The club was instrumental in providing many sponsorships over the years for youth and adult sports, scholarships for high school seniors, and donations to local charitable nonprofits. The loss and passing of President Tony Sayre last year, proved to be too great for the club to continue. The club divided the remaining funds equally and donated to the following local charities:
- Friends of Healing House
- Silver Linings
- Deming Literacy/Gila Reading Council
- Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County
