Alma Carson of Silver City was elected to serve as the Kiwanis Southwest District Governor during the 2022 Annual Convention held in Chandler Arizona on July 30th. Alma’s journey in the Kiwanis organization began in 1999 and through the years of her volunteer service to youth has been honored with Distinguished Secretary and President of the Silver City Kiwanis Club, Distinguished Lt. Governor, and has served as K-Kids Administrator, and worked with Builder’s Club, Key Club, Circle K, Key Leader, and Aktion Club. Alma also has facilitated the Terrific Kids program at Harrison Schmitt Elementary for 16 years. Alma will begin her term the Kiwanis Southwest District Governor on October 1st. The Southwest District of Kiwanis International serves children and families in Arizona, New Mexico, and the El Paso area in Texas. For over 100 years, they have had a proud history of helping youth and their families, with a presence in many communities through youth and adult programs. The Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society will be celebrating the fort’s 156th birthday with a series of informative lectures by the group’s local historians. The speakers include Dr. Doug Dinwiddie, Ms. Cecilia Bell, and Joe Saenz. The event will be held at the New Deal Theater on the grounds of Fort Bayard National Historic Landmark, on Saturday, August 20, beginning at 1 p.m. Entitled “Fort Bayard: A Cultural Crossroads in Southwest New Mexico.” The symposium is supported by the New Mexico Humanities Council, and is free to the public. Local law enforcement will be stepping up traffic patrols throughout the month ensuring that drivers are driving sober, legally, and safely. A reminder that schools are going back into session and drivers need to mindful of stopping around school busses in addition to being on the lookout for children crossing streets.
