Stream Dynamics, Inc. will be collaborating with the Town of Silver City to provide free Rainwater Harvesting to Silver City residents. They will be working on installing 100 urban green infrastructure projects like, curb cuts and curb cores that will be designed to harvest stormwater runoff into basins on or adjacent to sidewalks. Residents must meet certain qualifications such as the property needs to be within city limits and residents need to be able to maintain a curb cut and basin over time. Silver Regional Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) in Silver City will be giving away free back to school clothes to all community members on Tuesday, August 8th. They will have clothing for all sizes, styles and genders. This event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the College Street Plaza, Suite 18. All those in need of clothing are encouraged to attend!

Thank you to all the children and families who made the “Viva Bike Rodeo” in Silver City such a great success. Over 53 youth attended the event along with the Silver City Police Department and New Mexico State Police. Each child received a “safety checklist” of activities to complete that emphasized the importance of street and railroad crossing and how to identify common traffic signs. Children also received prize bags, first aid kits and were able to learn about the importance of looking both ways when riding a bike. 

The City of Deming will be having a Town Hall meeting Tuesday, August 8th to give the community the opportunity to talk, share opinions and ask questions. The meeting will take place at 5:00 p.m. at the Andres Silva Convention Center and the public is encouraged to attend. 

Increased activity on the Turkey Fire, which was mapped at 1,300 acres on Saturday, is producing smoke that is very visible from Gila, Cliff and Silver City. The wildfire was discovered on July 22nd on a ridge of the Pinos Altos Range on the edge of the Gila Wilderness and is currently spreading in Shelly and Spring Canyon through ponderosa pine, pinyon-juniper and brush. A high-pressure system is in place over the region bringing warmer and drier conditions and Forest Lookouts and aircrafts will continue to monitor the fire. 

The New Mexico Oil and Gas Association (NMOGA) is giving away free “Ultimate Backpacks” to five New Mexico Students to help create a positive impact on education. The backpacks will include an iPad, air pods, school supplies and a pizza party to celebrate with their class. New Mexico Students K-12 are eligible and registration will be open until August 14th.
