Mimbres Press of Western New Mexico University will hold a reading and book signing at historic Light Hall on the Silver City campus on Wednesday, September 6th starting at Light Hall Patio at 5:30 with appetizers and refreshments provided by Bear Mountain Lodge from recipes that will be featured in the upcoming Mimbres Press publication, “Bear Mountain Lodge Cookbook.” At 6:30 in the Light Hall Auditorium, there will be readings from two books published by Mimbres Press, Arturo Magaña Amaya’s “Nostalgias of November | Nostalgias de Noviembre,” a bilingual Spanish and English collection of poetry, and M. John Fayhee’s “A Long Tangent: Musings of an Old Man and His Young Dog Hiking Every Day for a Year.” The readings will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signings by the authors.
If you work in the New Mexico agriculture sector, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) – in collaboration with the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) and the Governor’s Office – encourages you to complete a survey to help identify infrastructure priorities that may be addressed with funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). In this case, infrastructure includes – but is not limited to – facilities, structures, equipment and storage needed to address the middle of the food supply chain for food crops. There is $4.6 million available in grants for infrastructure improvements. The survey must be completed by August 24th. In other news, the Columbus Visitor Center will reopen September 15th to operate 11am to 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday. The center is located in the historic Hoover Hotel site in the center of the Village of Columbus. Another year lease has been signed between the managing nonprofit and the Village of Columbus. The historic Hoover Hotel holds historical value for its involvement in the 1916 battle against the invading force of Pancho Villa.
Don’t forget the Deming Duck Race is happening this weekend. Starting Thursday, August 24th enjoy the carnival that opens at 5pm. There will be the Luna County Skate Competition and the Bravo Mic Communications Duck Royalty Pageant. Friday the carnival opens at 2pm. Fort Bayard Historic Preservation Society recently celebrated its 157th anniversary. The office date of founding of Fort Bayard was yesterday, August 21st, 157 years ago, in 1866. In honor of this anniversary, the society’s president, Douglas Dinwiddie, gave a brief history of the Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Bayard doing this presentation from the historic Fort Bayard Theater.
