At the time of compiling this report, the New Mexico Department of Health, announced a total of 23,951 New Mexico COVID-19 confirmed positive cases. In addition, COVID-19 cases locally impacting the area are as follows: Grant County increased to 75 total cases and an increase to 34 recovered; Luna County increased to 263 total cases with an increase to 97 recovered; Hidalgo County remains at 93 total cases with an increase to 53 recovered; and Catron County remains at 5 total cases.

The New Mexico Community Development Council has announced it will be investing $13.3 million of Community Development Block Grant CARES Act funds for emergency housing assistance to low-income and moderate-income New Mexicans. The council is composed of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham administration officials and other appointees from all over the state. A member of the council representing District 5 is Spenser Baca, of Silver City. The emergency assistance will consist of up to three months of rent, mortgage, or past-due utility payments for qualified applicants. According to a release, qualified applicants must meet program definitions of low and moderate income (80 percent of Average median Income or below); demonstrate a reduction in income due to the COVID-19 pandemic; and must not be receiving rental, mortgage or utility assistance from another source.

The Silver City Museum will be hosting a Zoom panel discussion featuring Silver High School teachers, Claudie Thompson, Lee Wilson, and their 2019 SHS National History Day Team comprised of Mikaela Johnson, Gabriel Perez, Hailey Cisneros, and Christian Kilgore. The discussion will focus on the Silver High School National History Day program and the winning project with the students sharing their experiences with the process and challenges that go into creating an award-winning documentary, namely the beloved children’s show, Sesame Street. The event can be watched on September 26th at 11:00AM by registering at silvercitymuseum.org.
