The Gila National Forest will be having an “Open House” on Thursday, August 3rd to discuss the proposal to conduct vegetation treatments on lands within the Silver City Ranger District. The meeting will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Grant County Business and Conference Center and the public is encouraged to attend. The Santa Clara Youth Conservation Corps completed numerous jobs this summer in the Village of Santa Clara and Fort Bayard. There were 8 youths who helped by packing and moving books from the library to storage, moving boxes of old documents, decorating the Village float for the 4th of July parade and helped bring back the historic 9 hole golf course in Fort Bayard. The youth also worked on planting small fruit trees for the community to enjoy at the park next to the Santa Clara Senior Center. A big thank you to them for all their hard work!

Lordsburg Hidalgo County will be having their annual “National Night Out” event this evening, August 1st from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be food, music, swimming and more. Silver Consolidated Schools is looking for educational programs in Grant County that would like to be a part of their “Back to School” staff meeting that will take place on August 7th. According to Silver Schools Superintendent, the meeting will be to provide local information and resources regarding social, emotional and mental health issues. Also, this will give education focused programs the opportunity to connect with teachers for classroom programming support. Fire Crews are working on a new wildfire called the “Dolan Fire” that is located in the Black Range Ranger District of the Gila National Forest. The fire was reported on July 30th and is located 1 and a half miles to the west of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) and is estimated at 113 acres. Resources assigned to the fire include smoke jumpers and a district engine who are assessing FS Road 4052P and the CDT for containment options.
