The Gila National Forest is asking all neighboring residents around the Reserve Ranger District to be cautious of the materials that are being thrown in the slash pits. Recently, staff have noticed an increase of trash, used tires, roofing and other construction materials being burned, which creates health and safety hazards and violates air quality regulations. The slash pits are to be used for vegetative materials only so that the burning complies with New Mexico Air Quality regulations.
Congratulations to Mr. Travis Yurcic who will be retiring at the end of the month, from Jose Barrios Elementary School. Mr. Yurcic is the Principal at Jose Barrios and has served the Silver City Consolidated School District for over 25 years. Over the years, Mr. Yurcic has demonstrated unwavering commitment and dedication to student development, strong family partnerships, nurturing student achievement, collaborative engagement with staff and has helped foster community growth for Silver Schools and the Town of Silver City. The City of Bayard is working on enacting an ordinance that would require the registration and payment of an annual fee where a vacant residential or commercial structure is certified. The purpose of the ordinance is to help protect the health and safety of the City of Bayard by ensuring appropriate maintenance of vacant residential and commercial structures to prevent the development of insanitary conditions, unsafe deterioration of the structure, and unauthorized entry. It will also help promote the City’s public welfare by protecting property values and neighborhood integrity and safety.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation District One (NMDOT) office will be conducting a maintenance operation project starting August 16th, to place “chip seal” pavement on NM 180 in Hidalgo County. The chip seal will be placed to help seal out moisture and create a more durable surface extending the longevity of the road. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and NM 180 from Interstate 10 to NM 145 will be closed and a detour will be in place. For more information, visit the website.
