The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department will be holding a local public hearing on Tyrone Operation’s proposed “Emma Expansion Project.” According to Freeport McMoRan; “The new pit would encompass approximately 130 acres on private property south of the Tyrone/Thompson road. Emma is expected to be in operation for three to five years. The operations will run 24-7, with mine vehicle equipment hauling rock from Emma back to existing operations. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2022, depending on necessary permits and approvals.” The public hearing is being held at the Grant County Veterans Memorial Business and Conference Center at 5:00 P.M.

Beginning on Monday, August 15th, the New Mexico Department of Transportation District One office will be continuing a maintenance operation project to place chip seal pavement resulting in a planned roadway closure in place for NM 15 from milepost 7 in Pinos Altos to the intersection of NM 35. In addition, NM 15 will be closed from 8:00 A.M. to until 4:00 P.M. A detour will be on NM 35 to NM 152. The project will continue daily until completed.

Silver City Recycles is holding a drop-off day tomorrow, August 13th from 10:00 A.M. to 12 noon at their location at 305 South Bullard Street. Volunteers are also needed and can visit https://silvercityrecycles.org/ for more information. Starting this month, a $1 fee will be charged per car for collection of any plastic in order to offset the cost of transportation and processing. Silver City Recycles is overseen by a five-member volunteer board of directors. So far it has been estimated that over 150 tons of glass and 225 cubic yards of plastic material have been diverted from the local landfill.
